17 Goals. 1 School and Minecraft

Throughout 2017, a group of post-primary students and teachers from Presentation College Bray led a design experiment. They sought to explore what a school might look like if it were inspired by the internationally agreed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

They explored the theme through the use of the popular digital computer game Minecraft   as a digital learning tool to realise their ideas for changing their school community environment, one brick (or block) at a time.

The project included a wide variety of outputs including a set of maps, a video, a virtual ‘rebuilding’ of their school, public presentations of the projects and a results blog ‘Want a sustainable world?  Build it’.

The project also inspired similar Minecraft projects in schools and youth clubs in Ireland and internationally, going on to be nominated in the inaugural UN Sustainable Development Goals Action awards.
