Nelson Mandela address

On 1 July 1990 Nelson Mandela arrived in Dublin to fulfil a promise he had made...

Two years previously while in jail in South Africa Nelson Mandela was installed as a freeman of the City of Dublin and he had vowed to come in person to receive that honour when released.

At a ceremony in the Mansion House Mandela received the Freedom of the City and spoke of the ‘wonderful support’ Irish people have given to the anti-Apartheid struggle. He also acknowledged that Dublin was the first city to confer its freedom on him.

While in Dublin, Mandela also met with some of the Dunnes Stores workers who had been on strike for three years highlighting the abuses of the apartheid regime.
