The First Grader tells the true story of an 83 year old Mau Mau veteran, Margue, who is desperate to learn to read and write when ‘free education for all’ is offered by the Kenyan government. Through his struggle to earn his place in school, while facing opposition from parents and government officials, we are also told the story of British colonial rule where Margue fought for the freedom of his country. The First Grader is an inspiring, uplifting story about one man fighting for his right to education while facing so much discrimination from his own countrymen.
Released in the cinema from 13th May 2011.
